SUNDAY, November 2 MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDE
It looks like we finally got rid of Pete and Jerry for this Sunday, so now we can do something really fun! I'm OK doing something up north, where Alan doesn't have to do all the driving. Let's hear your ideas.
Finally. I hope you're personally watching over Richard. I know its a lot of responsibility, and many have tried and failed, but I think you are probably capable of it.
Even though we still don't know about Alan's availability, I think this is a good idea and so does Steve. However, neither of us know how to get there, so could you post some directions? See you there at 8:00am (after the DST change tonight).
If Alan doesn't plan to ride, we could meet at the old San Marcos Landfill/methane power plant which is located on the right side of San Elijo Rd before you get into the little town of San Elijo Hills, on your way to Alan's house. Unfortunately I don't know the mileage from Rancho Santa Fe Rd. There is a wide gravel driveway and a sign. From there we can ride a short distance on the road to a fireroad that goes to the top lookout spot at La Costa Preserve. It is steep, but rideable, which is more than I can say for the last fireroad we tried to take to the top. Then we can go down Whiptail....at the bottom we can traverse over to Horned Lizard and climb back up to the view point. Then go back down Whiptail (it is worth doing twice) but this time take the Copper Creek Trail which heads back to where the Landfill is. There are other options once we get into the area that would add miles. There are trail maps online.
It looks as though the old landfill is a little over a mile from the intersection of Rancho Santa Fe rd and San Elijo Rd (on your right when driving along San Elijo) -it is at the mouth of Hidden Canyon Rd which is a gated dirt/gravel road and not really driveable past the landfill building anyway.
